Navigating College Admissions & Financial Aid Together

FOR GENESEE COUNTY MUSLIM STUDENTS & FAMILIES

A multi-session, community-based college preparation and financial aid program designed specifically for Genesee County Muslim students in grades 8–12 and their parents/guardians. All sessions are held at the Flint Islamic Center. This program seeks to expand access to higher education resources and support students and their families navigating the college application and scholarship process.

This program also seeks to strengthen Michigan's talent pipeline by encouraging students to pursue, complete, and remain in the state for postsecondary education and careers.

Session Details

  • Session 1: Common application & recommendations workshop

    August 29 · 1.5 hours

    1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
    Hands-on guidance navigating CommonApp, selecting colleges/universities that fit your career goals, the SAT decision, reporting requirements, and requesting recommendations.

  • Session 2: Academic planning & building a competitive resume

    September 25 · 1.5 hours

    7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
    Dual enrollment, work and volunteering, CLEP, AP/IB, transfer-friendly planning, essay and resume development.

  • Session 3: Financial aid & scholarships: paying for college

    October 9 · 2 hours

    7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
    FAFSA, Michigan Student Aid, Genesee Opportunity, institutional and private scholarships, and cost-reduction strategies. College Month.

  • Session 4: Career pathways - roundtable with Michigan professionals

    November 15 · 2 hours

    1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
    Learn about careers you may not have heard of, and the education pathways to reach them. Six to eight professionals share 10-minute field introductions, followed by group discussions.

    This 5 minute survey is anonymous and voluntary. Your responses help this program and its partners understand the evolving needs of students in grades 8–12 and their parents/guardians in this process, and help identify topics and shape the design of future sessions.
