Apply smart
Check the Fit Before You Apply
Read the eligibility rules
- Grade / class year: Senior only? College students only?
- Where you live & study: State, county, district, or specific high school
- GPA minimum: 2.5? 3.0? 3.5? Weighted or unweighted?
- Citizenship status: Citizen, permanent resident, DACA?
- Income or need: AGI limits, Pell eligibility, SAI
- College type & load: 4-year only? Michigan only? Full-time?
- Major or field: STEM, journalism, trades, education…
- What it takes: Essay, recommendations, transcript, interview
If you don't fit, move on. Spend your time on scholarships you clearly qualify for — then apply to every one of them. Track each in the scholarship spreadsheet.
Protect yourself
Scholarship SCAMS: Red Flags
Never pay a fee, never give bank/credit card numbers or your SSN, and skip sites that only ask for an email. Report fraud at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
Red flags
- Asks you to pay — Real scholarships never charge an application or "processing" fee.
- Wants sensitive numbers — Credit card, bank account, SSN, ID or passport numbers.
- Guarantees you'll win — "Guaranteed or your money back" — no one can promise that.
- Creates urgency — "Send your bank info today" — a deadline is normal; pressure is not.
- Just asks for an email — Email-only forms often sell your address — expect spam.
- You "won" a contest you never entered — Unsolicited "national foundation" awards are a classic scam.
You Did It! Now, Make Sure the Money Lands
- Accept & say thank youReply by the deadline; write the donor a thank-you note.
- Send what they ask forProof of enrollment, student ID, college address. Most pay the school directly.
- Report it to your aid officeOutside awards can change your aid package — ask them to cut loans first.
- Watch your student accountConfirm it posts as a credit on your bill — often after drop/add.
- Follow up if it's missingCall the donor and the college's bursar/aid office with your award letter.
- Keep it for next yearRenewal rules: GPA, full-time, FAFSA every year, thank-you letters.
